A Message from Gigi DiBello, Head of School
As Sophia Academy enters its 11th year of providing an excellent education to middle school girls from Providence, we look back with pride on our first decade and forward with great expectations to our future.
Founded in 2001 by the legendary Sr. Mary Reilly, Sophia Academy is the only independent middle school in Providence that provides a gender specific, holistic educational experience that focuses on the intellectual and emotional growth of its students and families. Sophia offers girls facing economic inequities an empowering educational program in a vibrant community where they learn to live and lead as confident, compassionate young women.
As Head of School, my philosophy is informed by my daily interactions with our diverse group of girls and their families. It is my core belief that by listening to students with a compassionate and discerning ear, Sophia Academy can create an environment that is transformative and generative. By encouraging respectful dialogue and institutionalizing equitable structures for intellectual exchange -- both in and outside of the classroom -- Sophia students will develop their own voices as they mature and become responsible, engaged citizens in our community.
To meet that lofty goal, we have recruited an outstanding faculty, who continually expands their knowledge and skills by working on a regular basis with masters teachers from noted area middle schools. Over the last few years, our curriculum has been revamped to support best practices in Math and Science, Language Arts and Gender Responsiveness. We have a vibrant social justice curriculum for our oldest students that focuses on relevant global issues facing women. We've also integrated into the curriculum several experiential educational program and trips, including an annual visit to the Farm School in Athol, MA and regular field trips to a nature preserve in Cumberland, RI; the United Nations and New York City, and Washington, D.C.. In addition, successful Basketball and Robotics Teams have been added over the last three years.
Our partnerships with local colleges and universities have expanded to include an athletic mentoring program with Johnson & Wales University and a relationship with the Feinstein Center for Public Service at Providence College.
In our first year of participation in state-wide NECAP testing, Sophia Academy students scored much better than their Providence peers (girls) in Reading and slightly or significantly better in Math.
Our overarching goal is to prepare students for successful high school careers. We're proud of the fact that 92% of Sophia Academy alumnae graduate high school after four years and close to 100% graduate or receive a GED after five years. (According to RI Kids Count, the four year graduation rate for the Providence School District's Class of 2010 is 68%.)
With the support of a diverse Board of Directors, we anticipate moving during the 2012-13 Academic Year to a new facility that will allow us to better respond to the educational needs of our students. Over the next few years, we also hope to successfully earn accreditation through the Association of Independent Schools of New England.
